Custonaci is the main centre for marble quarrying in Sicily and the second most important in Italy and Europe. Here, Sicily′s Perlato and Perlatino marble is extracted, the two renowned types of marble that are highly appreciated and in demand all over the world, particularly in the Middle East, where it is used to clad domestic and public buildings, both internally and externally.
Sicily′s Perlato marble has also enjoyed considerable success in Italy as well as abroad, having been used in the cladding of St. Peter′s Basilica in Rome and the monumental Central Station in Milan. The reason behind its success lies in its particular resistance to rain, moisture, heat and cold as well as its distinctive appearance. It has a light ivory base tone, white calcite areas, and veins that range in colour from brown to orange.
